Frequently asked questions

+ WHY IS PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT?

Photography is essential to marketing your products. The online experience is very visuals driven. You need product photography to populate your website, post to social media, run adverts and campaigns and demonstrate to your shoppers what your products look like and how they work.

Poor photography and styling can hurt your business. Weak images don't allow your products to shine and can lower the overall tone and quality of your brand.

Trust me, beautiful product photography plays a HUGE role in getting your products into the shopping cart of your customers.

+ WHAT IS ANCIENT MONKEY?

Ancient Monkey is a collaborative venture I co-founded with my brother, Andrew. All projects related to Product Photography and Stop Motion Animation are now handled through Ancient Monkey.

As a creative studio, Ancient Monkey offers not only photography and stop motion but also 3D animation, character design, and more. To learn more about Ancient Monkey and its offerings, please visit the Ancient Monkey website www.ancientmonkey.com.au

+ HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE FOR PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY?

I find that every client and project is unquie so rates may vary depending on what you would like me to create for you. Complete the intake form at the bottom of this page to start chatting about a project and get a quote.

While the cost of photography varies based on your specific project needs, my minimum rate for a product photography project is $3,000 (which means that projects may be more than this amount but they wont be less)

+ WHAT ARE LISCENSING COSTS?

Under Australian law, as the photographer I own the copyright of images I create. When you hire me to create images for you I license those image rights to you to use for a specific use and period of time.

The more uses that the images have, and the more eyes that will see them, the higher the cost of licensing because they have more value. When I send you a quote, it will include liscensing costs and terms.

+ WHY DOES PHOTOGRAPHY COST SO MUCH?

There are many unseen hours that go into a photoshoot. Because I offer a full-service, I take on more roles than just your photographer. I also step into the role of art director, producer and stylist. I invest a lot of time creating a mood board, coming up with concepts and figuring out how to execute those concepts. This often includes research, shopping for and/or making props, casting models, scouting for locations, applying for permits, building sets, creating shot lists and much more. This is all before I take a single photograph!

After the shoot, it’s time for post production. This process starts with culling, which means going through all the images I shot and decieding which are the best for editing (this can take hours). After this I can finally begin my edit. Editing time can vary depending on the type of image, but generally I will spend up to 30 - 60 min on each photo. So for a 15 image shoot, I will spend anywhere from 7.5 -15 hours on editing alone.

As you can see, A LOT of time goes into each shoot. But its not just my time that you are paying for, but also for my experience. I have a degree in fine arts media production and have invested countless hours in other forms of education upskilling and learning how to take better images for you.

+ I'M JUST STARTING OUT AND CAN'T AFFORD A SHOOT. WILL YOU SWAP FOR PRODUCT?

While I'd love to be able to swap shoots for product. Unfortunatley its just not possible for me as each shoot I create takes a lot of time and resources and I must earn money to pay the bills.

If you are not yet at a stage where you feel ready to invest in professional product photography. Don't despair, I have online courses and workshops available which teach you the basics of product photography and styling so that you can create quality content yourself. Check out the learning resources here.

+ DO YOU HAVE A WAITING LIST, AND HOW CAN I BOOK?

I tend to get booked up one month in advance. However I do occasionally have dates become available earlier. To book a photoshoot or enquire about timeframes, email me with your requirements and we can get the ball rolling.

+ CAN I SEND YOU MY PRODUCTS TO PHOTOGRAPH REMOTELY?

Yes! I offer a remote service. This means you can post me your products from wherever you in the world and I will photograph them and send them back to you via post. The cost is exactly the same as my your quotes price plus postage costs.

+ HOW MANY PHOTOGRAPHS WILL I GET?

That will depend on your project. I find that each shoot is different. It helps if you can come to me with a clear idea of exactly how many images you need and what you will use them for. Once we start chatting about what you need, I will put together a custom quote for you based on that number of images and the production which will be required to bring your vision to life.

+ I'D LIKE YOU TO PHOTOGRAPH ME / MY SHOP / STUDIO, IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Absolutely, I love capturing behind the scenes images of creative spaces and the people behind the brands. Get in touch to chat more about this!

+ I'D LIKE YOU TO PHOTOGRAPH MY EVENT, IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Yes, I love photographing events! Get in touch using the form above to tell me more about your event and we can get the ball rolling.

+ HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

There are three stages to a product photography shoot: The first is the development of the concept. This usually take 1-2 weeks. During this time I'll be reserching, moodboarding and consulting with you about the shoots direction.

Next is the production stage. During this time I'll be sourcing or making props and sets and photographing your images. This stage takes around 2 weeks.

Finally there is the edit, depending on the number of images in your package this phase can take 1 - 2 weeks.

Overall a shoot can take anywhere from 3 - 6 weeks depending on the complexity of the project. So if you have a deadline you are working toward be sure to book your photoshoot with plenty of time to spare.

It’s important to note that I don’t offer partial delivery of photoshoots. All your images are delivered as a collection once they are ready.

Once your photos are ready I will send you a link and password for your own private viewing gallery where you can view and download your images. You will receive both high resolution and web ready images

+ WILL I RECEIVE THE RAW IMAGE FILES?

The way I edit my images is instrumental to my style. Until a photo is edited, I consider it an unfinished work. Because of this, I do not release RAW files. You’re not here for half-finished images, let me give you images only in their best, completed versions.

+ HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A PHOTOSHOOT?

We will have some initial conversations to decide on the direction and concept of your shoot. In the lead up to the shoot we'll keep in touch to discuss plans and we can even set up a joint Pinterest board to collate ideas. You can read more about how to prepare for a shoot over on the blog here.

+ DO YOU HAVE A STUDIO?

Yes! I have a new studio located in Asply Queensland. I don't have clients present in the studio for shoots, however you are welcome to drop in at the start of the shoot to check out the direction and give feedback. After that, you can head off and grab a coffee and leave the hard work to me.

+ DO I NEED TO PROVIDE PROPS FOR THE PHOTOSHOOT?

When you book a shoot with me you’ll gain access to my collection of props, backdrops and surfaces.

If your shoot concept requires specialy props I will do the prop shopping for you and add this to the cost of your shoot package.

If your shoot requires a custom prop or set build. I will source materials and build your set, the cost of the materials and my labour are then added to your photography package.

If you already own items which are required for the shoot (such as specialty props or backdrops) you most welcome to provide them to me to work with.
