Meet the Maker: 4 Questions with Ingrid Bartkowiak

Ingrid is a Brisbane-based artist whose work bursts with curiosity, colour, and a love of the natural world. We spent the day with her in her studio and out in her cute little veggie garden, chickens wandering around as we shot. The session captured the joy and creativity that flows through her work, and her strong connection to her surroundings – the nature, the garden, and even the chickens – that inspires everything she creates. Below, I’m sharing some of my favourite images from the shoot, alongside a few questions I asked Ingrid about her process, inspirations, and daily life.

What’s your creative process or daily ritual?

On my working from home days, I start the day by letting out my chickens and then usually doing some planning and admin in the garden so they can free range (I like that this forces me to sit outside first thing in the morning!). I try to get the more practical jobs done first as my best painting time happens later in the day and night.

What’s your favourite local spot to recharge?

I love Mt Coot-tha, but anywhere I can catch some nature and outdoor time (my garden and the Kedron Brook also rate highly).

How do you find balance in your life or business?

Hmm tricky! I still don't know that I've found the balance! Something that has definitely helped though is accepting that on my 'work from home' days, it's ok if my work hours are really...weird? For example, leaning into the fact I like the paint in the night, and so then not feeling guilting for taking a bit of time out to garden or go for a walk during the day.

What’s inspiring you lately?

The beautiful weather we've been having, and spending time outdoors.
