How to make a textured product photography backdrop

Having a bit of texture is always helpful for product photography. When shopping online, it's not a tactile experience. So adding in some textural props, backdrops and surfaces can bring a bit of tactility to the experience and really liven up an image.

Good textural props include: marble, concrete, stone, wood, linen, velvet, satin, crumpled paper, metal, cork that have great texture. You can also make your own textures - which is a fun craft project, and has the added benefit of creating a texture that is unique to you and your brand images.

So in this blog I’m going to walk you through how I created this simple textured backdrop.

YOU WILL NEED:

STEP 1: PREP YOUR BOARD

Use the Primer (Gesso) to paint your board and get it ready to add the joint compound.

STEP 2: ADD JOINT COMPOUND TO THE BOARD

Using a spatula you can now add your joint compound. This is the fun part! You can create whatever type of patterns, streaks and swirls you like.

STEP 3: PAINT THE BOARD

Leave your joint compound to set for a day or so, once it's dry you can paint over your textured board in whatever colour you’d like.
